  1. Why did I embark upon the self-aggrandizing task of creating a web site?
  2. I have always been a voracious consumer of information. When I entered the professional world I found that there was a lot of information out there that was difficult to find. Such was usually in a book somewhere that I new nothing about or was stuck in somebody's head and never let out to play. So, I started pushing to make information more available or at least cull lists of sources for it. The Web was just starting to take off at the time and it was the perfect format to contain the respository of information that I had in mind. With that, I started my own web site to learn the technology (since I needed it for my job anyway) and keep track of the interesting, informative and just plain neat things that I learned.

My use of the Web has become a habit and some would say an obsession. And, such personal site building has since become somewhat of a habit at different companies.

Then I moved away from my family and wanted to keep in touch with them. Being a few time zones away made the telephone a bit difficult so, I decided to start putting the things that happened in my life online and have gradually been adding more recently acquired or less well known things. As it has grown, I have added items that have made an impression on me or perhaps I just found interesting or thought provoking. So, like any good site, this continues to evolve and grow.

  3. How do I contact you? Why can't I just click on a link to send you email?
  4. One word: spam I own the domain GlenCoakley.org so, if you wish to contact me, just send an email to 'webmaster' (without the quotes) at that domain name.

That indicates whether the link it to another part of my site (the bolder colors and underlined) or to a different site (the dimmer ones that are not underlined).

  5. Why do some words have a character that is underlined?
  6. This aids in the accessibility of the web site by providing a hot-key for that link, if your browser supports it. If supported, when you place your mouse over such a link, but don't click it, your browser should also display a tool-tip that indicates the corresponding hot-key. You can press and hold your Alt key and that underlined letter at the same time to activate that link without using the mouse.

  7. What is the development philosophy behind this site?
    1. The site is created using W3C web standards.
    2. It is accessible according to W3C standards.

To that end, the only W3C Accessibility items not addressed on this site are:

Priority 1: Items that must be satisfied. Otherwise, one or more groups will find it impossible to access information in the document. Satisfying this checkpoint is a basic requirement for some groups to be able to use Web documents.

      Glen: none in this section

Priority 2: Items that should be satisfied. Otherwise, one or more groups will find it difficult to access information in the document. Satisfying this checkpoint will remove significant barriers to accessing Web documents.

13.2 Provide metadata to add semantic information to pages and sites.

      Glen: I can't be bothered.

Priority 3: Items that may be satisfied. Otherwise, one or more groups will find it somewhat difficult to access information in the document. Satisfying this checkpoint will improve access to Web documents.

10.3 Until user agents (including assistive technologies) render side-by-side text correctly, provide a linear text alternative (on the current page or some other) for all tables that lay out text in parallel, word-wrapped columns.

Glen: I don't have any of these that are of any importance.

    3. It is functional and navigable on all text and graphical web browsers.
    4. Extra, browser specific or 'cute' features will only be added in such a manner as not to interfere with the above.
    5. Browser specific code is strictly avoided so, pages may look different on different browsers. But, they should look reasonable. Though, to work around bugs or handle newer features some browser specific code does exist and once I have even resorted to browser sniffing[GASP] for particularly annoying problems.
